Fun Apple Macintosh Past to Present chart

Apple surprised a lot of people when they announced the switch to the Intel processor line after years of deriding it.

As a long time Mac user (I bought an original Macintosh 128K/Imagewriter combo for $2500), I thought of how many changes there have been over the years to the Apple "party line."

In the spirit of Orwell, I threw together a fun little Past and Present chart for various technologies that have been ridiculed then embraced. I put the changes in roughly chronological order as I remember them.

Take a walk down memory lane...

Sucked then? Sucks now?
Function keys and numeric keypad Yes, only Tools of the Machine need these. No, look you can even custom program them!
Multi-button mouse Yes, a single button is perfect and elegant. Kind of. Still sucks to have multi-button mouse, but cool to have single button mouse and hold down CTRL key to change function of mouse button.
Slots Yes. The two high-speed serial ports are more than enough for any expansion. No, NuBus rocks!
IDE Yes, IDE is slow and lame. Buy SCSI. No, IDE is cool. Standard in all Macs.
USB Yes, stupid slow bus completely useless. Buy firewire. No, it's the main interface in the iMac!
PC Monitor standard Yes, totally low-res lame display standard. Great if you're a primitive. No, but you do need an adapter to allow a cool machine to plug into such crappiness.
PCI Yes, NuBus is way better. No, maybe NuBus kinda sucked. Use PCI!
TrueType No, TrueType is great. We invented it so it's the wave of the future. Yes, we've buried the hatchet with Adobe. Only lame Windows people use it.
Taskbar Yes, Taskbar sucks. Who wants all that clutter on the screen? No, taskbar is cool if it has docking graphics.
Intel Yes, freakin' snail chip. PowerPC is like a supercomputer! Go AltiVec! Well, umm, PowerPC was great, but sucks now. We've been looking to transition for the last century. All Macs will be Intel based by 2007.
Microsoft Yes, they steal all the good Mac ideas. Lamers. Ummm.
